・色鉛筆で絵を描き始めたきっかけ
私は２２年間化学教師をしていて、アートは全く無縁でした。約１５年前に教師を辞めてから２、３ヶ月の間は病気の治療のため何もしていませんでしたが、自分自身を表現するために絵を描いてみようと思いました。
しばらくはグラファイト鉛筆やペンやインクを使っていましたが、その後絵の具を使って描いてみようと思いました。しかし自分には難しすぎると気づき、手をきちんと動かすコントロールが必要だと思って色鉛筆を購入し、自分に合った画材だと思いました。全く描けなかったのに、今では色彩で描けるようになっています。
色鉛筆は３つのＣ－Ｃｏｌｏｕｒ（色）、 Ｃｏｎｖｅｎｉｅｎｃｅ（便利さ）、 Ｃｏｎｔｒｏｌ（コントロール）ゆえに私は色鉛筆という画材が気に入っています。
I was a Chemistry teacher for 22 years and had never done any art at all. About 15 years ago now, I had a breakdown from teaching and had to quit. For a few months I did nothing, I was on heavy medication. Then I tried to draw to express myself - I had never drawn before. For some time I worked only in graphite pencil or pen and ink. I tried to paint, but found it too hard, I needed to be in complete control, I needed stuff to stay where I put it. Then I bought a box of Derwent pencils and found my medium - I could now draw in colour.
Colored Pencil is my favourite medium because of the three C's - Colour, Convenience and Control. And because I cannot paint, though I am trying to learn.
・ＵＫＣＰＳ設立について
色鉛筆で絵を描き始めて、その１年ぐらい後にＣＰＳＡに入会しました。
イギリスには色鉛筆協会がなかったからです。
そして、ある雑誌でパット・へファー（現在、ＵＫＣＰＳ展覧会ディレクター）が
色鉛筆を使って絵を描いている人がいないかを尋ねている記事を見て、
イギリスに協会を設立するのが良いアイデアであると思いました。
インターネットを使って呼びかけ、約４０名のアーティストが賛同してくれました。今ではおよそ５００名の会員が在籍し、第７回目の展覧会を開くことになりました。
After a year or so I had joined the CPSA as there was no Society in the UK for me to join. Then I saw a letter from Pat Heffer in a magazine asking if anyone else used coloured pencils, and thought it would be a good idea to start a Society in the UK - so I could join it! I found about 40 other artists on the internet who were interested and launched the Society. We have now over 500 members and have just had our 7th Open Exhibition.
