My name is Julie Podstolski. I am a New Zealand born artist (born in 1959) who lives in Perth, Western Australia.
I studied painting at University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
In 2003 I visited Japan for the first time. I was amazed with what I saw. Japan is such a unique country. There is nowhere else like it. I knew that I wanted to capture Japan in my art. What caught my eye was the energy of the country and the mix of ancient and modern, side by side. I felt the spirit of the past and the rush of the future all going on at the same time. How exciting!
I have two main threads of subject matter. The first is the Floating world of Maiko-san and Geiko-san in 21st Century Kyoto. The second is about illumination; the lights of the big cities. I draw many pictures of both subjects.
I visit Japan every year now. This is easy to do as my husband must visit Japan for business so I go with him. I love to do this. He is not even allowed to go to Japan unless he takes me with him! I have been nine times so far and I can see no end to my trips. So I feel that I have an ongoing relationship with Japan and Japanese people. When I am in Japan I take many photographs. These become the source material for my drawings.
My two favourite places are Kurashiki and Kyoto.
In 1994 I started to use coloured pencils. I used to paint in oil paints however I discovered that I enjoyed using coloured pencils more so now I work only with pencils. I hope to achieve luminosity and a sense of drama with my pencils. I want my drawings to sing. I also hope to convey my love of Japan to my audience.
Recently I began a website of my art so that I could have a bigger audience than just people who live in my city. I hope you will have a look at my website. 私はジュリー・ポドストルスキーといいます。
1959年にニュージーランドで生まれ、現在は西オーストラリアにあるパースに住んでいます。私はニュージーランドのクライストチャーチにあるカンタベリー大学で絵の勉強をしました。
2003年に初めて日本を訪れたとき、日本の特有さを目にして驚きました。日本のようなユニークさを持った場所は他になく、私のアートの中でその日本らしさを捉えたいと思いました。日本という国がもつエネルギーや、共に並んだ古代と現代の混合が、私の目を捉えました。過去の魂と勢いよく進んでいく未来を同時に感じ、なんてすごいんだ！と思いました。
私には題材にする２つの主なテーマがあります。ひとつは２１世紀の京都における舞妓さんと芸妓さん、２つめは大都市における光、イルミネーションです。私はその２つのテーマをたくさん描いています。
私は今では毎年日本を訪れています。私の夫が仕事で日本へ行くためいつも同伴するからです。私と一緒でなければ日本へ行くことを許さない！なんて言ったりしています。今まで９回日本へ行きましたが日本への旅行はこれからも終わりはありません。なので、日本や日本の人々ともずっと続くおつきあいを感じています。私は日本へ行くとたくさんの写真を撮り、これが私の絵画制作のもととなります。
私のお気に入りの場所は倉敷と京都です。
１９９４年に私は色鉛筆で絵を使い始めました。ずっと油絵をしていましたが、より色鉛筆の楽しさを知り、今では色鉛筆のみで制作しています。私は色鉛筆によって輝きとドラマのようなものを表現できるよになりたいと思っています。私の絵が歌い出だすように描き、見る人たちへ私の日本への愛を伝えられるようになればと思っています。
